Top polar scientists on campus for free film event
Two of the country’s top polar scientists will be sharing footage from their expeditions at the Polar Film Festival at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ next week (Tuesday 3 September).
BBC Frozen Planet science director Dr Mark Brandon and Professor Martin Siegert - Principal Investigator of the Subglacial Lake Ellsworth experiment, will provide a unique insight into working in the Polar Regions as part of an evening exploring their effect on the UK climate.
They are joined by fellow scientists Dr Peter Abbott (Swansea University) and Alexander Ingle (University of Edinburgh) whose films explore the impact of historical climate changes and give a light-hearted snapshot of life living and working in the field.
All four scientists will take part in a panel discussion immediately following the films.
Event organiser Eleanor Darlington said:
“We are delighted to be able to welcome such well-known polar scientists to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and to find out more about the varied research British scientists are undertaking in the Polar Regions.
“This is an event not to be missed for anyone with an interest in science, climate, or extreme engineering.”
The Polar Film Festival takes place from 6.30-9pm (films begin at 7pm) on Tuesday 3 September at the Stephenson Lecture Theatre in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s Hollywell Park. The event is open to all and is free to attend by registering in advance at www.polarfilmfest.eventbrite.com or by calling 01509 222797.
The Polar Film Festival is being hosted by º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s Department of Geography as part of the International Glaciological Society British Branch Meeting.
