Professor Jowett’s research work mainly revolves around interpersonal relationships in sport with an emphasis on coaching relationships. It aims to make a difference through generating knowledge and understanding of the effectiveness of quality relationships.
She has written widely on theoretical, empirical and practical issues revolving around the optimisation of coaching environments for performance success and wellbeing through quality coach-athlete relationships, sound leadership and effective communication.
Sophia has developed and validated, what is considered to be, the gold standard assessment tool known as the Coach-Athlete Relationship quality Questionnaire (CART-Q). Her research and that of her team is considered to have paved the way for a much better understanding of the intricacies and impact of relationship building onto sport excellence.
In a recent bibliometric analysis of sport coaching scholarship, Sophia was ranked second worldwide (first woman globally) underlining her productivity as an author over the past 50 years. Sophia has worked with numerous sport organisations both in public and private sectors nationally and internationally.
