Whether you are a member of º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ staff, another student or family member, we appreciate that managing concerns surrounding another person can be difficult.

During their time at University, students may be subject to incidents, experience emotional distress, varying levels of physical and mental wellbeing or may experience a traumatic event. These may fit into the categories of emergency, urgent situation and non-urgent situation.

It is good practice to inform the student that you are reporting concerns, unless it is unsafe to do so.

When reporting for someone else please consider whether you can offer signposting or pastoral support for non-urgent situations or actions you would need to take in an emergency.

Think

Is the situation an emergency, urgent situation or non urgent?

An emergency situation:

  • There is imminent risk to life, including actions to end life or intention to end life, this may include intentional acts (suicide) and impulsive behaviours.
  • A student has indicated they wish to harm others, with intention.
  • A student's behaviour indicates that they are clearly physically or mentally unwell and require immediate medical attention
  • A student's behaviour is disturbed and/or aggressive that puts themselves and other community members at risk.

For any of the above

If any of the above apply this would require emergency services, call 999 and make Student Welfare aware.

Also, make a report on the online reporting tool which will trigger a response from Student Services DAI team.

Report to the University online

An urgent situation:

  • There is a risk to life, including thoughts and actions, which may include previous suicide attempt and acting on impulsive behaviours.
  • A student has indicated that they have thoughts about harming others without intention
  • A student or community member has indicated that they are at risk from another person (this may include family members or another student community member)
  • A student’s behaviour indicates that they are becoming unwell and may require medical attention in the future
  • A student's behaviour is disturbed and/ or aggressive and needs proactive management

For any of the above

If the student is unable to be left alone then staff members should seek to get the student to a place of safety (i.e. hospital).

A non-urgent situation is defined as not requiring immediate action, as it is being managed or action taking place in a timely way.

These include:

  • A student's behaviour indicates distress, heightened emotion or thoughts that are upsetting with no actions intended with no threat to self or others
  • A student expresses anger
  • A student who has a managed mental health condition and is receiving ongoing support from a core university or external service
