Richard Bebbington, HR Product Manager within the IT Services team at the University, and his wife Ange have completed their remarkable 1,500-mile Rome2Home cycle challenge in support of the charity Wishes 4 Kids.

Their journey began in Rome on Thursday 22 August and concluded on Saturday 14 September in Ashby, where friends, family, and supporters gathered to celebrate their accomplishment.

Richard and Ange braved 36-degree heat as they cycled along the Italian coast, passing iconic landmarks including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and tackling demanding mountain passes commonly used by professional cyclists.

Their journey led them from Rome to Genoa, after which they headed inland, climbing over the Passo della Bocchetta (772m) and Passo del Bracco (615m). They then crossed into France via the Petite Saint Bernard Pass (2,188m), a height significantly greater than the UK’s highest peak, Ben Nevis (1,345m).

Upon returning to the UK, the final stretch of their journey took them from Portsmouth to Ashby, via Reading, Banbury, and Market Bosworth. They cycled through picturesque British landscapes, including the South Downs National Park and along National Cycle routes, enduring unpredictable British weather.

Fortunately, they were greeted by sunshine on their final approach to Ashby where they were met with overwhelming support. They were welcomed with waving Union Flags and warm applause outside Zamani’s Restaurant.

Reflecting on the celebration, Ange said: “It was like a dream. The atmosphere was electric and Zamani’s hospitality was unreal, endless pizzas, a feast fit for royalty. A perfect end to our Rome2Home cycle challenge.”

Richard added: “We can hardly believe we’ve achieved this. It’s been a physical, emotional, and mental rollercoaster, with many ups and downs. The support we’ve received from everyone, including many University colleagues, has helped us through the toughest moments.

“Like all our challenges, this one was self-organised, self-funded, and self-supported, ensuring that every penny raised goes directly towards making a wish come true. Knowing this, along with the support, kept us going when we struggled the most.”

Richard and Ange have raised nearly £7,000 for Wishes 4 Kids, including a generous £1,000 donation from the Ivanhoe Runners, a local running group of which they are members.
