I’ve always been passionate about physics from secondary school and my strongest subject has always been Maths. I really liked the modules in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ university particularly the computational physics modules. º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ university has great industry connections and I knew by studying at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ I would be able to accelerate my career.

Why did you choose this course?

I’ve always been passionate about physics from secondary school and my strongest subject has always been Maths. I really liked the modules in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ university particularly the computational physics modules. º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ university has great industry connections and I knew by studying at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ I would be able to accelerate my career.

What benefits did your placement have?

My placement year at CGI was an invaluable experience, I have been able to grow into a confident individual with a new found skill set. I was able to apply the team-working, problem-solving, computational, and public speaking skills that I developed in my 1st and 2nd years of my course in real-world applications. I have gained an insight into the industry by meeting lots of different professionals from various backgrounds which has broadened my horizons for my career.

What tasks did you do on your placement?

A typical day would start with a stand-up meeting where I would relay the status of my work to the team. I then worked on my tasks, which varied but would include writing unit tests for the source code, implementing code changes, prototyping code, updating and writing documents. Throughout the day I would often need to talk and work with my colleagues for advice, help or information I needed for my tasks.

What has been your greatest achievement during or since your time at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?

My greatest achievement has been completing my placement, I’ve been able to apply my skills from 1st and 2nd year in real-world applications and projects, whilst also gaining new skills equipping me for the future.

What do you think about the quality of student support you've received at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?

I received detailed feedback on my CV and cover letters and also advice on going forward with interviews and assessment centres. I also got notified regularly of new and different opportunities for internships and placement positions for Physics students.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

I would strongly encourage someone to do a placement year, not only does it give you an opportunity to develop your skills and apply them in real-life projects, but also gives you a valuable insight into your career path after university.
