Research areas

  • Polymer deformation. My research has concentrated on the development and use of a range of novel high strain rate test equipment which places the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Physics Dept. among the most comprehensively equipped high strain rate test laboratories in the UK This equipment has been used to investigate the behaviour of polymers at high strain rates and has led to the discovery of unusual crystallisation phenomena at high rates and temperatures.
  • Internal stress measurement. My work is focussed in the area of the fundamental science behind the methods commonly used by engineers to measure residual stresses by means of neutron and X-ray diffraction. The work casts doubt on the accuracy of the commonly used methods and we are presently working towards improved procedures which will lead to more accurate and reliable measurements.
  • Musical acoustics. My interest is in the area of psychophysics and the perception of sound. It questions the commonly accepted explanations on the perception of consonance and is particularly directed towards the sounds produced by bells and gongs.
