The Guardian Guide 2024 places º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ among the Top 10 universities for the study of physics in the UK.
The Department of Physics has also had further good news in recent months with the confirmation of IOP-accreditation (under the new scheme) for its undergraduate courses.
The Institute of Physics (IOP) recently revised its accreditation process - in part, to place a greater emphasis on how university physics departments develop the professional skills of their students. At º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, we agreed to take part in a pilot of the new accreditation scheme and were successfully reaccredited by the IOP for the maximum term of five years.
Professor Mark Everitt, Director of Studies within the Department, said the accreditation "recognises the innovative approach we have taken to the subject at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Our physics courses are designed to support deeper learning across core physics, essential mathematics, computing, and practical hands-on laboratory experience in our state-of-the-art STEMLab."
The Physics undergraduate degree courses at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ were completely redesigned in 2019 with the aim of ensuring a thorough grounding in fundamental physics, whilst also developing students' problem-solving abilities, teamworking, and good programming practice, as well as the cutting-edge data skills and abilities in scientific computation required of the modern physicist.
The Department's commitment to delivering a high-quality student experience was also reflected in the recently published National Student Survey (NSS2023) with 97% of students positive about academic support*.
The Department of Physics operates an open-door policy, meaning students do not need to make an appointment to drop in to see us. We also offer one-to-one tutoring, dedicated mathematics support, and weekly peer assisted learning sessions.
