Biography

I completed my undergraduate B. Ed. (Hons) specialising in Primary Years and Maths Secondary,  and Masters (Comparative Research in Education) at the University of Malta.

For 9 years I was a Primary teacher, teaching mainly in junior classes.  Since 2011 I work as an Education Officer (for Primary Mathematics) in the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes within the Ministry for Education and Employment in Malta.  Together with a team of Heads of Department and Maths Support Teachers, we offer support to all primary schools in Malta, reaching out to different stakeholders, through different paths.

Research

As part of my Master’s research, Malta’s First TIMSS Results: Comparing Local and Global Discourses on TIMSS’ effect on Policy and Reform(2014), I have evaluated  the policy responses and educational reforms undertaken in Singapore, Japan, the United States of America and Malta following their participation in TIMSS [Trend In Maths and Science Study].

Through my doctoral design-based research project, I will look into the learning experiences of primary students who are gifted and talented in mathematics in mixed-ability Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms in Malta.  I plan to investigate the methods of provision, if any, primary schools in Malta are currently using to meet the mathematical learning needs of these students.
