The MEC held its Annual Symposium on 24th and 25th May, a two-day event this year. The theme was Algebra: Gateway to mathematics, science, society and the world.
On the first day there were four keynote speakers, each eminent and well known for their research into the learning and teaching of algebra, albeit each taking a different focus. Questions were collected from participants leading to a discussion session with the speakers at the end of the day.
On the second day there were two parallel strands of short papers within our theme. Three critical responses were presented, one relating to each of the sessions, and a plenary discussion took place at the end of the second day.
The symposium was stimulating and thought-provoking in drawing our attention to aspects of algebra that challenge our students and the teaching-learning issues associated with them.
The presentation slides from the speakers are available here.
