Dr Matthew Inglis and Dr Nina Attridge of the Mathematics Education Centre have published a new book entitled Does Mathematical Study Develop Logical Thinking?
Dr Inglis and Dr Attridge describe their research to test the Theory of Formal Discipline, which states that studying mathematics develops general thinking skills that are useful throughout life. The theory has been asserted and assumed throughout the centuries, but this book presents the first empirical evidence to establish whether it is true.
