Biological Fuel cells are a type of fuel cells that uses enzymes (either pure or in whole cells) to
catalyse the oxidation and reduction reactions at the electrodes. The technology has several
advantages, mainly the cost-effectiveness of the materials required, the easiness in miniaturisation
and the possibility to use waste as the fuel. Particularly attractive are niche applications, such as
self-powered water quality monitoring systems and wearable healthcare devices.

Dr. Mirella Di Lorenzo, the leader of the Biosensors and Biofuel Cells group will give an overview of
the research activities in her group including: Microbial Biofuel Cells for Rapid Water Quality
Analysis, Non-Invasive Glucose Sensing, Biofuel Cells for Implantable Medical Devices, and Nano-
Structured Gold for Improved Biocompatibility.
