The School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering (AACME) undergraduate summer internship programme concluded on Friday 10 September with a poster presentation session. 

Throughout the summer of 2021, AACME held an internship scheme for students across the three departments, which were funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Henry Royce Institute, and the School itself. Fourteen undergraduate students from the School undertook short research topics on a variety of subjects.

The internships culminated in an in-person event on 10 September – attended by the interns, their supervisors, and the School directors – in which each intern had the opportunity to deliver a poster presentation about their work. The internships spanned a broad range of research areas, focusing on research in thermal management of electric vehicles, target tracking of drones, foamed emulsions in cleaning products, smart water treatment, and decarbonising bioceramic manufacturing.

Academic staff judged the posters on their clarity, quality of scientific content, and their overall visual appeal. The top three posters were by Sam Thomas (Automotive Engineering), Vanessa Lee (Chemical Engineering), and Anastasia Krief (Materials Science and Engineering), who were presented with Amazon vouchers for their achievements. 

The internships allowed undergraduate students in their penultimate year of study to spend 10-weeks working full time on a research project, defined by academic supervisors, allowing the students to develop key research skills and learn what may be involved in a research career.
