Mark joined SG Technologies during a busy period of expansion and new product development.

The company is a global leader in the production of high-performance magnetic components for solenoid applications, electric motors, sensors and instrumentation. Its customers include Caterpillar, Delphi, Robert Bosch and General Motors.

A common – and perhaps the most demanding – challenge within this field is deburring metal components, particularly on the large scale of more than 250,000 per week to exacting standards.

Mark joined the team exploring ways to make the deburring process more efficient.

His input impressed his employers, and has radically reduced the deburring process he tackled to a matter of seconds, improving overall manufacturing costs, time and output.

As well as demonstrating first-class project management skills, Mark developed excellent working relationships with his colleagues and, during his placement, earned Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt status.

Mark posed for a photograph with his certificate upon returning to the University, stating:

'I was certainly very surprised and honoured to be nominated and shortlisted for the Universities placement award but it capped off a fantastic year as a placement student in industry. I would thoroughly recommend the DIS/YINI schemes to anyone on a STEM course as an absolute must; it's one of the best things you can do as a student. I had a fantastic time on placement, it really improved me as a person and student, improved my approach to my final year studies immensely, and my enjoyment of, and results this year have reflected this'.
