Materials Students Win Pirelli Student of the Year Awards
On August 4th 2017, Three º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students were named as winners in the annual Pirelli Student of the Year awards after impressing on placements with the company in 2016-17.
Peter Thompson, (pictured above, second from the right), a Design with Engineering Materials student in the Department of Materials, was named Student of the Year for his work in Research and Development in Carlisle, where he helped develop numerous innovative ideas and concepts, (including new die design concepts and extrusion process knowledge), contributing to the impressive results achieved on both the tread and sidewall extrusion lines.
Second place went to George Ralph, (Mechanical Engineering, pictured third from the right above), from Quality in Carlisle for his work in reducing scrap and improving uniformity of tyres, and in third place was Lucie Denton, another Materials Engineering student at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, (pictured above right), who completed her placement at MF1 in Burton and received her award for her contribution to improving processes at Mini Factory 1.
In July 2016, 23 students from universities across the country embarked on a one-year placement with Pirelli – each working within a different function in the business.
Towards the end of the year, department managers were invited to recommend their student for the award, providing feedback on their approach, how they developed in their role, their contribution to their team and their involvement in key department projects.
Pirelli UK Chairman & CEO, Dominic Sandivasci, said:
“We are delighted to have had another great group of students join us on placements over this past year.
Peter, George and Lucie have impressed their departments with their hard work and their contributions to their teams. I would like to thank them and all of the other students and wish them the best for the future.”
The Department of Materials would also like to offer Peter, George and Lucie our congratulations on their achievements and we look forward to hearing about their future engineering successes!
