Euan Hall
Computer Science
Why did you choose º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?
I chose º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ to challenge myself and do something new - live away from my family and become independent. I wanted to see how far I could push myself and get the grades needed for º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ compared to my other choices. The fact the uni is situated in a middle of a town intrigued me. Plus, the reviews online stated that the student support and halls of residence were outstanding, and from my experience, I fully agree.
What made you choose to study Computer Science?
I've always been interested in computer science from a young age, recently my interest has evolved towards machine learning. While looking at universities I had a look at what they had to offer, and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ spoke to me - they offered the modules I wanted to do and focused more on coursework compared to other universities. I've always been better at coursework than with exams.
Did you come on an open day? If so, how did that influence your decision to study at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?
Sadly, I couldn’t go to an open day due to covid. However, I did a self-guided tour around campus during Summer 2021. I really enjoyed the fact everything is walkable, the fact that buses are free on campus, and it's a lot quieter than cities.
What do you enjoy most about being a º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ student?
I really enjoy the wide variety of societies at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ university. I participate in quite a few, including gardening and video games, and feel welcome by both the students and committee. Furthermore, the LGBTQ+ association has been a great help during my time at here. I've met some great friends and enjoyed many other events with said people. Lastly, the student support is phenomenal. I've used it many times, and each time I've felt better and supported for what I need.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoy the coursework and how you get to choose who will be on your team, I enjoyed Software engineering 1 in part A (the lecturer was very funny and made the module a lot more entertaining) as well as Logic (same with the SE Lecturer, he made the module very entertaining).
What advice would you give to someone considering studying Computer Science at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?
Be prepared to feel overwhelmed, but don't feel like it should stop you in your path. Take a minute, take a breather, and push yourself to do more. I've had many ups and downs, but thanks to student support I've managed to push in and reach my goals so far.
What do you think about the facilities at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ?
I really enjoy the library and the self-checkout machines; it shows the wonderful use of artificial intelligence and image recognition. Secondly, I've talked about the student support many times, but I don't think I've said enough about them. They are a wonderful team of people, and I would highly recommend using them I'd you're stuck in life, feeling down, or just need someone to talk with. They have really helped me during my battle with depression.
What are your plans for the future?
I have multiple goals currently, one goal is to become a PhD student and research more into AI and Machine learning, get a master's degree and find a job in the tech industry, or finish my BSc and head into a job straight away. I've also got backup goals in case I don't reach those ones, one such goal is to become a horticulturalist and work to become a head gardener, a passion I discovered through the gardening society at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
