He is a Professor of Digital Skills, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (FIMA) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He is Chair of the North-West Branch of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). He was concurrently an Associate Lecturer with the Open University (2008-2012). In 2010, he volunteered as a STEM Ambassador and in 2014 he became a Speaker for Schools. His research area is in Dynamical Systems, and he is a world leader in the use of Maths packages in teaching, learning, assessment, research and employability. He is the co-inventor of binary oscillator computing and the author of ten books. Note that all his Springer books have accompanying working programs that can be downloaded from the web. According to Springer, chapters for his books have been downloaded over 750,000 times. Working with the IMA, he delivers one-day national workshops in the UK on “Python for A-Level Mathematics and Beyond.” He also delivers a 5-day international workshop on “Python for Scientific Computating and TensorFlow for Artificial Intelligence.” He has run the workshops in China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the USA.

He is a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews, the Institute of Physics, CRC Press and Springer International Publishing.

He has been External Examiner/Course Reviewer at Coventry University, Plymouth University and Salford University.
