Industrial Placements

All our students have the opportunity to complete a placement year in industry. This year of practical work gives you a clearer understanding of the industry, helping with the later stages of your study and deciding your future career direction.

A placement year allows you to gain valuable work experience in a role and industry or sector you’re interested in, develop key skills and competencies sought by graduate recruiters, and build a network of useful contacts.

Most placements are salaried, and several students are offered permanent employment to return to after graduation. A placement year usually takes place after the first two years of study and on completion students will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Our Industrial Training Coordinator gathers and supplies information about placement opportunities and advises students on what to expect from the experience. The process is overseen by our Placement Administrator, who helps our students secure placements which best match their interests and ambitions.

Examples of employers include AstraZeneca, British Sugar, BP Chemicals, ExxonMobil, GSK, Mars Petcare, Molson Coors, Brewing Company, Mondelez, Pfizer Ltd and Unilever.

Engineering Careers and Placements Fair

As well as our university-wide careers events, we host our Engineering Careers and Placements Fair which has seen over 80 companies attend including major consulting and contracting companies looking to exclusively employ º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ graduates.

Our annual fair is a great way to make connections with our industry networks and find out what opportunities they have to offer. The event is on all day so you can drop by at any time to chat with companies. They also hold presentations throughout the day to give an insight into who they are, what they do and what they're looking for.

Some companies include Jaguar Land Rover, Tate & Lyle, Severn Trent, Smurfit Kappa, JCB, Proctor & Gamble, Rolls-Royce and Pirelli.
