Basmah Bushra is a first year PhD student in the Department of Chemical Engineering within the school of AACME. She is supervised by Dr Diganta B Das (Chemical Engineering) and Professor Paul Wood (Geography). In her research, she focuses on the effects of metal pollution on aquatic ecosystems with particular reference to their bioavailability and their potential effects on aquatic organisms. She graduated with an MSc - Research in Environmental Management from Nottingham Trent University in 2020, MSc in Environmental Assessment and Control from University of Derby in 2018 and BSc in Environmental Science from Independent University, Bangladesh in 2017.
She was awarded with Dean’s Honour List and Vice Chancellor’s Honour List in Independent University, Bangladesh for her academic excellence throughout the years of her bachelor’s degree.
During her masters, she conducted her research in lead contamination from river water and sediments from the River Ecclesbourne, Derbyshire. For her masters by research thesis, she investigated spatial variability in the benthic macroinvertebrate communities of ‘Winterbourne’ chalk streams. She interned at the AKH Group in Dhaka, Bangladesh by looking at their ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) and had a work placement in Derby City Council as part of her course from the University of Derby. Apart from her academic life, she is an avid traveller, enjoys cooking and watching movies.
