Do I need to pay for an apprenticeship?
Despite working towards a university degree during your programme, you may be pleased to hear that apprentices do not pay tuition fees, thanks largely to how the funding for apprenticeships works. The training and assessment costs are covered entirely by your employer, in most cases via government funding, and they are not allowed to ask you to contribute.
Apprentices are not permitted to take out student loans to pay for any part of their apprenticeship, and where an individual transfers from a full-time further education or higher education course that course has been funded by a student loan, it must be terminated before the apprenticeship starts.
In accordance with government guidelines, apprentices enjoy the same rights as any employee, including the entitlement to both a legal wage and annual leave. Of course, this isn’t to say that an employer wouldn’t offer an apprentice more than the legal minimum wage, this will almost certainly be dependent on a number of factors, including your position, skills, and age.
