Flo Sargent
Hello I’m Flo and I’m studying Textiles: Innovation and Design at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and I specialise in multi-media. I’m currently on my placement year away from university and have been working for fashion brands, interior decorators and small design studios.
Illustration has always been central to my work, whether this be as part of the design process or in my graphic print designs. Despite working largely on 3 dimensional textile designs illustration has allowed me to express this creativity when it is not possible to create these sculptural pieces. I have found a love for visual story-telling and am determined to have people enjoy illustration as much as I do.
Tara Westover
Tara Published her memoir educated in 2018 in which she tells the story of her childhood and growing up as the youngest of seven children in an extreme survivalist family in rural Idaho. Tara was denied schooling and healthcare whilst being subjected to abuse from her delusional father and living with her mother’s struggle with brain damage and mental health. Tara resists this repression and educates herself eventually going to Harvard and then onto Cambridge to complete a Ph.D in History.
Tara's determination and her sense of self that gives her the power to overcome her family yet still find love and a fierce loyalty to them is inspiring. It is a beautiful and inspiring story and one that deserves to be shared visually.
The illustration depicts a grown Tara Westover comforting her child self amongst a sea of her own imagination that was suppressed by her circumstances.
