Music rooms

Do you play an instrument or enjoy singing? Are you looking for somewhere on campus where you can practice? LU Arts has seven music rooms in Martin Hall, and they're available for Music VIP members to use free of charge.

º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ the music rooms

There are seven music rooms located in Martin Hall (East Park). Each room has an upright piano and is available on a turn-up-and-play basis for Music VIP members. They can be used for solo acoustic practice but they are not suitable for group or amplified practice, or for drums (unless you are using an electronic drum kit with headphones).

We do have a large music room located behind Cope Auditorium in Edward Barnsley Building (on the other side of Epinal Way to Martin Hall and the main campus). This room is used by the various Music Societies and access is restricted. If you are part of a group and a society and you would like to book this room then please email LUArts@lboro.ac.uk.

When are the music rooms open?

From 8am to 10pm, seven days a week (except for Bank Holidays and University closure days). Please note that the largest music room is used by our music tutors for tuition during the week and may not be available. Our tutors may ask you to vacate this room if they have a lesson booked.

We receive occasional reports of Music VIP members being unable to access the music rooms in the evenings and at weekends because the gate into the courtyard of Martin Hall has been locked. If this happens, please call Security on 01509 222141 and politely ask if someone could open the gate. Please also let us know by emailing LUArts@lboro.ac.uk.

Who are the music rooms for?

Current º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students and staff. This includes postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students.

How do I access the music rooms?

To use the music rooms you need to sign up to Music VIP (for free). Following this, access to the rooms will be added to your campus card so you can swipe in and out of the building, especially out of office hours.

Between 9am and 6pm you can enter Martin Hall main entrance, turn left into the corridor, exit through the doors beneath the stairs on the right-hand side and out into the courtyard, the music rooms are on the left. Outside of these hours, you can only access the music rooms via the external courtyard entrance and the music rooms are in the building immediately on your right.

Please note that the grand piano pictured on this page has been upgraded this term (autumn 2023) to a better quality upright piano. We are awaiting updated photos.

Accessibility

There is step-free access into the building. An accessible toilet is located on the ground floor of Martin Hall on the corridor leading to the main foyer. This is only open during office hours. If you have any specific access requirements that you would like to talk to us about in advance of using the practice rooms then please email LUArts@lboro.ac.uk. We would be happy to meet you in person and show you the rooms.

Location

We've made a video to help you find the rooms.

Large instruments

If you play a large instrument then you you may find it convenient to store your instrument by the music rooms to save you carrying it about. There is a locked store cupboard opposite the main entrance to the music rooms. You can request a key to this cupboard, but please note that access is shared with other students, our music tutors and Domestic Services staff. Instruments stored in here are done so at the owner's risk. LU Arts cannot be held liable for any loss or damage of instruments or equipment. If you are interested in using this cupboard then please email LUArts@lboro.ac.uk. You will need to show your campus card as proof of identity when you collect and sign for your key.

Music tuition

Tuition is available in a range of instruments and usually takes place in the music rooms.
