Reclaiming the Narrative: Chronicles of Black Joy

An opportunity to be part of a brand-new audio platform launching during Black History Month.

We have invited recent º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ graduate Rennae Walker to develop a new audio platform that will be launched in late October 2021.

As Producer, Rennae has developed the concept and is now seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to create new audio and written work for the platform.

The audio releases on ‘Reclaiming the Narrative: Chronicles of Black Joy’, are intended to offer a different narrative to the black British experience that is often perpetuated in the media, popular culture and even institutions. This platform will instead be celebratory, presenting work that is rooted in blackness, identity and, most importantly, joy.

We will present work by a collective of dynamic artists who are using their art to inspire and provoke conversation on how multi-dimensional Black British identities are. We also want to partner with an array of emerging black writers/students from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ to share their creative stories on identity beyond struggle.

Student opportunity

We are inviting applications from current º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students (UG and PG) to be part of this exciting audio project and develop a new work for us. There are four student commissions available. These will be presented on the platform over a four month period, starting with the launch in late October, alongside work by professional artists that Rennae has also asked to contribute.

If selected, you will get a £50 fee and you will also be offered financial support to help you produce your work. This could be to cover the cost of using a sound studio or hiring appropriate kit. We are also working with another recent º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ graduate, Reece Ferreira, who will support the music production and editing and can advise you on this aspect.

The work will be presented on a micro site that is being developed by a third º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ graduate, Vuyo Ngwenya and will also be available on all the main streaming platforms. As such this is a great opportunity to get your work heard by people nationally and internationally.

To apply, please email an expression of interest to luarts@lboro.ac.uk with ‘Chronicles of Black Joy’ in the subject line. Your expression of interest should give an idea of what you might want to do, how it fits the brief and examples of any relevant previous work. Selection of students will be made by Rennae who is curating the content. Further information can be found in the brief, which you can download below. Please read this before submitting an expression of interest.

Deadline for expressions of interest: Monday 11 October 2021

If you have any questions about the project please email n.slater@lboro.ac.uk

Accessibility

We want this opportunity to be accessible to all students. To support this, we will accept expressions of interest in different formats e.g. audio, if this is more appropriate for you. If you would like to discuss any accessibility issues or need further support, then please email luarts@lboro.ac.uk or call 01509 222948.
