This summer, Team Falcons became the winners of the Esports World Cup, winning a huge prize sum and taking victory on a global scale.

The Esports World Cup – a multi-genre esports competition – took place in Saudi Arabia for the first time this year and will become an annual event.

Team Falcons’ win comes just a few months after the team won ESL One Birmingham 2024, Europe’s biggest Dota 2 esports event in six years.

In his role, Grant is responsible for building and designing the entire esports department of Team Falcons.

It’s a huge and proud moment for the Chemical Engineeering alumnus:

“There has been no prouder a moment in my career as to stand on stage to receive the Esports World Cup Trophy from HRH The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. After a huge 12 months of preparation and a gruelling eight weeks of competitions, Team Falcons are your inaugural EWC Esports World Cup Champions, and we take home the prize of $7 million (USD) with it.

“But for me personally, it represents the dream I set when I entered this industry.”

Grant’s role includes signing players and coaches, managing transfer fees and budgets, and looking at performance physiology. Designing the strategy and managing game entries, Grant was responsible for the teams’ strategy for the World Cup – a huge feat, especially when leaving as champions.

When he graduated eight years ago, Grant initially started out in a finance role in the city, but he knew his dream was to pursue esports. He worked for several esports teams and organisations before landing a role with Team Falcons.

He added:

“Completely gambling on leaving the London finance world to chase a goal of lifting some esports trophies, the whole thing honestly does not feel real. Having been pushing in this career now for over eight years, I could only dream of the opportunity to compete in an event and magnitude of this scale.

“I’m so thankful to those around me, especially to my family, who’ve done nothing but support me through this massive grind and numerous sacrifices over the last eight years to reach the top.

“So it is with incredible pleasure and gratefulness that I can say, I’m a world champion.”

Congratulations, Grant.
