Tom Miles and Reece Malone play for º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Students Rugby. They were pictured together a few weeks ago with the BSR League trophy as they defeated Cardiff Met away. The team made history as they won the trophy for the first time.
Just over thirty years ago, their fathers Phil and Niall were playing in a similar position lifting the UAU trophy as the rugby team became champions in 1992. UAU was the Universities Athletic Union – similar to today’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).
Phil Miles graduated with a degree in BSc Physical Education & Sports Science with Recreation Management in 1991 and an MSc in Information Technology in 1992. Niall Malone graduated from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in 1992 with a BSc Physical Education & Sports Science with Recreation Management.
Now the next generation are at the University playing rugby and also studying similar subjects. Tom is in his second year of a BSc degree in Sport and Exercise Science whilst Reece is in his third year of a BSc Management degree.
On 5 April, the student pair were playing in the semi-final of the BUCS Super Rugby National Championship. The match, which took place at home, saw º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ take a 30-27 victory over Bath.
This sets up the team with the chance for a historic double in BUCS Super Rugby as they head towards an exciting final.
The students will be back on the pitch for the BUCS Super Rugby National Championship Final on 19 April at 7.00pm as they play Exeter. The game will take place at StoneX Stadium, Greenlands Lane, Hendon, London NW4 1RL. Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased online and alumni are welcome.
