The alumnus (English and Drama 2018) has always had a keen eye for the camera and presenting. His early years as a presenter started off at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Students’ Union where he interviewed students enjoying their night out, asking questions or performing tasks such as how to spell ‘onomatopoeia.’
Since then, his career has flourished, and he has interviewed stars such as Bugzy Malone and DJ Cuppy. Jameel started his television career at an early age, appearing on Junior MasterChef at the age of 12 and growing further connections within television.
He is currently working as an Assistant Producer at BBC Sounds following various roles in the media industry since he graduated just four years ago.
The New Voice Awards 2022 show saw various categories of awards, including Debut Director and Best Social Series with famous nominees including Ashley Walters, Harry Pinero, and Nella Rose.
The Future Presenter Award recognises Jameel’s potential and when speaking about winning the award, he said:
"It feels so surreal to have won the Future Presenter Award! Things like this don't happen to people like me - I'm just a boy from Birmingham trying to achieve my dreams.
“On the night, the room was packed full of stars like Munya Chawawa and Zeze Mills who were also up for awards, so it was incredible to have been nominated alongside them.
“I really want to encourage anyone who wants to get into media to just go for it! As a British Indian and East African, I've had a fair share of setbacks but I'm working hard to push boundaries and trying to increase representation of South Asians in mainstream media. I'm doing this for my late Dad who was always so supportive and absolutely loved º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ!’’
The New Voice Awards aim to celebrate emerging writers, creators, and directors and aim to discover the undiscovered to give them a platform and reward their creativity.
