The epic journey began on 5 October and is expected to take around ten weeks to complete. Andy has taken a career break so that he can dedicate his time and energy to this all-consuming task.
Andy said:
“My intention is to hold as many men’s groups as possible along the way… offering space for men to share and feel safe with challenges they may be facing.”
He has hosted several meeting groups throughout the last year and is hoping that each of the new meetings that he starts on this journey will create communities that continue after he has gone.
According to Andy’s YouTube feature, men account for around three-quarters of suicide cases in the UK. He acknowledges that this is often due to feelings of guilt and shame and is made worse by the lack of men’s groups where individuals can seek support.
The motivation for undertaking this event stems from Andy’s own life experience. He previously encountered personal challenges that impacted upon his mental health and led to severe depression. Now he wants to lead by example, using his own physical challenge to highlight the unseen struggles that many men have with their mental health.
Andy is a mindfulness instructor and has various other skills which include life and career coaching and well-being optimisation.
As well as seeking company during his trek, Andy is hoping for offers of accommodation and refreshments along the way. If you can help, or if you would like to join Andy in his venture, then you can contact him via his LinkedIn and Instagram pages.
We wish Andy the best of luck with his mission!
