The ORB Smartguard is unique because it can track critical fitness indicators like heart rate as well as head impact data. Alumnus Conor Hughes (Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering, 2022) has successfully launched an online service that enables families of school children to find private tuition. Once someone has registered on the Sherpa platform they can contact tutors, book introductory meetings and schedule lessons.

Volunteers wanted to help at November Marathon Swims event in London
The annual Marathon Swims event will be held at the London Aquatics Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 12 November. Marathon Swims was launched by alumnus Diccon Loy, who graduated from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ London with a master’s degree in Sport Business and Innovation in 2019. He is the CEO and Founder of Participation Sport Ltd., the organisation responsible for Marathon Swims.

Habib Hajallie (Fine Art 2017) has been selected as one of eight artists to take part in University of the Arts London’s (UAL) Decolonising Arts Institute 20/20 programme. He will spend 15 months at Pallant House Gallery as part of his residency.

Queen’s Baton designed by alumni and current student
Raymont-Osman Product Design is a company based in Warwickshire. Along with Birmingham Open Media and two other local design specialists, they were commissioned to design the Queen’s Baton for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Three alumni and a current º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ student were involved in the development and design of this technological device.

Graduate’s prosthetic leads Team England athlete to Commonwealth Gold
While studying at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, recent graduate Neve Deal (Sports Technology 2022) worked with Commonwealth sprinter Emmanuel Oyinbo-Coker to create an innovative prosthetic starting device. The device was recently worn by Oyinbo-Coker at the Commonwealth Games, where he won gold in the T45-47 100m.

Alumni duo create the next-generation smart sports mouthguard
Robert Paterson (Product Design Engineering 2017) and Thomas Quinn (Electronic and Electrical Engineering 2018) are the Co-Founders of ORB Innovations, who have created the world’s first smart sport mouthguard that allows contact & combat sport athletes to track their performance and wellness with heart rate and head impacts. It’s the world’s first mouthguard that monitors both physiology and biomechanics.

Kitt Medical wins London Mayor’s Entrepreneur Award – and £20,000 investment
Alumnus Zak Marks first shaped the idea of a ‘defibrillator for allergies’ while studying at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. He went on to design ‘ana’ (now Kitt Medical) during the final year of his Industrial Design degree. Kitt recently won the London Mayor’s Entrepreneur Award - and its £20,000 prize will go towards taking its life-saving idea to market. His idea of a kit for treating anaphylaxis incidents being available in public places came from a lifetime with a severe nut allergy.

Alumnus and ACT Medical founder Joseph Bentley (Product Design and Technology 2021) has won an 1851 Enterprise Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Engineering as he continues to develop his award-winning system for reducing the number of deaths from knife wounds.

Alumna celebrates longstanding service to Librarianship
Mano Ganeser (Library and Information Studies, 1989) has been a proud librarian ever since graduating from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. In December 2021, she retired after 54 years of working in various libraries around the UK. With her longstanding service, she is believed to be one of the longest ever actively serving librarians.

Supporting Black people in the construction industry: an insight into alumnus Amos Simbo’s company, network, and passion for engineering
Alumnus Amos Simbo has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, having studied at the University from 2008-2011. Amos travelled to the UK from Zimbabwe in 2005, chasing his passion for engineering and entering the University through clearing.

Julie’s ski maps become a hit on the slopes
In 2009, Julie Slaughter (Sports Science and Geography 1997) opened The Wipeout Europe business with the creation of the first ski piste map printed on microfibre for a European ski resort. The collection now covers over 100 resorts in France, Italy, Austria, Spain, and Andorra.

Four alumni, an honorary graduate, and a former member of staff have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for 2022. The list recognises people for their contributions to sports, charity, bird conservation, and disability services.

Arthur finds a worm: Alumna designs sculpture for New Blue Peter Garden
Teresa Wells MRSS (Art and Design 2006) is a multi-award-winning sculptor based in the UK. She was recently commissioned to design a featured sculpture for the New Blue Peter Garden, an exhibition at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

To mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the National Army Museum invited alumna Keziah Burt to sculpt a commemorative bronze portrait bust of Her Majesty.

Alumnus becomes oldest British person to summit Mt. Everest
At 68 years old, Graham Keene has become the oldest British person to successfully summit Mt. Everest, overtaking Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who was 65 years when he reached the peak in 2009.

Alumni Kate Walker and Benjamin Ndubuisi have been given a further boost to their early-stage businesses by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, through the Young Innovators Next Steps Awards. These entrepreneurs were previous recipients of the Young Innovators Award and have now been awarded a second time, based on their progress and their future growth plans.

First recipients selected for George Gandy Legacy Funding
The George Gandy Legacy Fund was created to support athletes at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in the pursuit of their sport, especially those experiencing financial hardship. The first recipients of the Legacy Fund were selected in February, with five student athletes receiving grants to assist with training, travel to competitions, physio treatment and a new socket for a prosthetic blade. Each recipient is a student athlete who has faced some sort of financial limitation which would impact their performance or participation in their sport.
