Tom Brown
10 June 1947 – 16 December 2020
It is with great sadness the University announces the passing of Tom Brown. The following obituary has been contributed by fellow Alumnus Peter Hale, who was a lifelong friend of Tom's having joined the same course in 1968.
"Tom Brown died in Christie Hospital Manchester, at the age of 73. Tom graduated with a Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1971. He developed Hodgkin's (a form of cancer) a few years after graduating".
"In 1985 Tom helped set up the National Conference of Cancer Self Help Groups and worked as it's organiser for seven years. Recognising the lack of emotional support available for people with cancer, Tom went on to establish a telephone support line. Through time this evolved into the charity "Being There" serving the Manchester area. Tom retired as President of "Being There" in August 2019. For many years Tom ran his own company called "TBProg", which provided companies with a service to tailor software programmes such as Sage etc".
Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Tom's family, friends and all of those that knew him.
