Donald Swindell
1935 - 2024
We are deeply saddened to announce that Donald Swindell passed away at home on Saturday 14th September 2024 aged 89 years after a long illness.
Don completed 2 years National Service in the RAF after leaving school where he was a Senior Aircraftsman specialising as a Wireless and Radar technician. He then attended º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ training college, now known as º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, from 1955-1958 where he completed a course in Handicraft and Geography and qualified as a teacher. He was an extremely skilled cabinet maker and made all of the wooden furniture in his home. He still made furniture well into his 70s using the skills he learnt at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. He talked fondly of his time at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and make lifelong friends there. After leaving he taught Woodwork and Mathematics at the William Allitt School in South Derbyshire for 33 years where he became Head of Upper School before retiring in 1991. He continued to return as a supply teacher at the William Allitt school for many years afterwards where he also volunteered in the Young Enterprise scheme helping students to develop the skills to start their own businesses. He dedicated his life to helping young people achieve their ambitions. He was quite a character and had an enthusiasm for conversation.
He will be remembered by his wife Gillian, his children Kath and Steve, Alan, Chris and Dan, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.
