Physical Education/Teacher Training, year of ’53. Whilst at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ he played for the college football team. Honorary Degree awarded in 2009 as part of the centenary celebrations. One of his grandsons accompanied him to the awards ceremony and celebration dinner.
Taught PE and Maths from 1953 to 1992. With most of his career being at Brittons School in Havering.
He was a keen sportsman excelling at gymnastics, football and tennis, wearing his African Violet º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ tracksuit with pride.
He was a founder member of a local tennis club at Mountnessing in Essex, and helped to build the club pavilion. He participated in the annual tournaments at the club, winning many singles titles and a mixed doubles title with his wife, June. He was also the captain of the club team.
He was heavily involved in the local community in Ingatestone, supporting football, the boys’ club and local events such as the annual carnival and fete. He regularly took a gymnastics team from his school to do demonstrations at the junior school that my sister and I attended, where he also helped to organise and run the annual bonfire and fireworks display.
He supported June, in helping her arrange and provide themed Christmas decorations for the men’s surgical ward at St John’s Hospital, Chelmsford where she worked as a staff nurse.
Above all though, he was a family man who devoted himself to his wife, children and grandchildren, supporting and encouraging us all throughout our lives in whatever endeavours we undertook.
